Killer father Chris Watts has outrageously pointed the finger at his late wife for his extramarital affair , despite being behind bars for her murder and that of their two young daughters in 2018.

Watts labelled his deceased wife a "control freak" while serving time for her murder and the killing of their daughters. The nation was horrified when it came to light that he had killed his wife and then concealed his daughters' bodies in an oil drum, with crime scene photos later uncovering their mother's body in a shallow grave nearby.

At the age of 33, Watts confessed to strangling Shanann, his wife, and smothering his daughters Bella, aged 4, and Celeste, aged 3, even as they pleaded for their lives. While Watts has never explicitly said why he committed these heinous acts, it is speculated that the motive was connected to his affair with Nichol Kessinger .

Evidence from text messages indicated that Watts and his wife were having significant marital problems, and he started his relationship with Kessinger just two months prior to the murders. Dylan Tallman, who shared a cell with Watts, told The New York Post that Watts had shockingly blamed his wife for his affair.

He allegedly said that his wife's demanding job took up much of her attention. Watts described Kessinger as the antithesis of his wife, writing in a letter to Tallman: "She was just everything my wife wasn't like with me. She was just nice, and not a control freak. We could make decisions together."

Kessinger cooperated with the police investigation, reports from The Denver Post. She said she was shocked to discover that he was still married and his wife was 15 weeks pregnant.

"I thought, 'If he was able to lie to me and hide something that big, what else was he lying about?'" she questioned. "He's a liar. He lied about everything."

In a series of horrific acts in August 2018, Watts disposed of his pregnant wife's body in a shallow grave and discarded the bodies of his young daughters into nearby oil tanks. Police released drone footage of the area, revealing the two massive oil rigs where the children's bodies were found.

The oil tanks had an 8-inch diameter hatch at the top, through which Watts forced his daughters' lifeless bodies. Questions began to arise shortly after Watts disposed of the bodies.

When police visited his home for questioning, a frantic Watts claimed he left for work early that morning while his wife and children were asleep. The following day, Watts appeared on local news, pleading with the public for help in the wake of the "earth-shattering" tragedy.

However, thousands of pages of documents, text messages, and video led police to suspect Watts' involvement. Two days after being questioned, he confessed to the murder of his wife.

  • Watts initially claimed that he only killed his wife after witnessing her strangle their children, a claim which was immediately dismissed by the police. He later confessed to killing all three of them and pleaded guilty to nine charges levelled against him.

The charges included: three counts of first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree murder involving victims under 12 years old, one count of unlawful termination of a pregnancy relating to Shanann's unborn child, and three counts of tampering with a deceased human body for burying Shanann's remains in a shallow grave and disposing of the girls' bodies in oil storage tanks. Watts is currently serving three consecutive life sentences for his crimes.
