Deion Sanders left with egg on his face after pre-game vow to 'next Patrick Mahomes'

Deion Sanders was left looking foolish after his pre-game vow to stop Dylan Raiola failed to materialize for his Colorado Buffaloes team.

Sanders saw his team run out of answers as they were comfortably beaten 28-10 by the Nebraska Cornhuskers to drop to 1-1 on the season. After beating their Big Ten rivals last year, freshman quarterback Raiola made a big difference to condemn Sanders’ team to a disappointing loss.

Raiola, the top-ranked high school recruit, made the surprising decision to commit to Nebraska after flipping from Georgia and has instantly become the starter. Prior to his second start against Colorado, Sanders confidently vowed his team would “get him” when the game got underway.

“We’re gonna get him,” Sanders told NBC. “We’re gonna get him. You’d best believe that.”

Yet Raiola, who has drawn many comparisons to Patrick Mahomes and wears the same No.15 jersey as the Chiefs superstar, led the Cornhuskers to a 28-0 lead by halftime. He ended the game 23-31 for 185 yards and a touchdown as Sanders and the Buffaloes showed little sign of getting him.

In fact, the 19-year-old, son of former Detroit Lions offensive lineman Dominic Raiola, was not sacked once during the game. In stark contrast, Deion’s son and Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders was sacked six times and constantly under pressure as their offense struggled to get going.

Raiola also impressed in Week 1, leading Nebraska to a 40-7 win over UTEP while registering 238 passing yards and two touchdowns. He’s still yet to throw an interception and has the Cornhuskers 2-0 ahead of their Week 3 matchup against Northern Iowa.

Colorado, however, has had a shaky start to Sanders’ second season. They started 2023 with a bang, with their win over Nebraska in Week 2 considered something of a statement before their season fizzled out.

Their attempts to rebuild the offensive line have so far not materialized and, despite edging a hard-fought 31-26 win over North Dakota State in Week 1, they look to have work to do if they wish to be contenders. They face a rivalry game against Colorado State in Week 3.
