Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule showed his class with a message of support to Shedeur and Shilo Sanders after the Colorado brothers came out on the wrong side of a humbling defeat.

The Cornhuskers proved to be a level above their old rivals at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, romping to a 28-0 lead at the half before cruising to a 28-10 victory to move to 2-0 on the season.

It was a chastening evening for the Buffs in Lincoln, with quarterback Sheduer leaving the game with two minutes remaining after a bruising night in the pocket. The porous Colorado offensive line gave up six sacks and 10 tackles for loss as they failed to gain any kind of momentum with ball in hand.

  • Defensive back Shilo, meanwhile, did not make it past the first quarter, suffering a suspected broken forearm which is likely to keep him out of action for a significant period.

Although Rhule was delighted by his team's performance, delivering a statement of their potential this season, he started his post-game press conference with a warm message to the Sanders brothers.

"First of all, I hope Shilo and Shedeur are OK," he said. "I don't know if Shedeur could have finished or not, but Shilo got taken in and was out, so hopefully they are both OK. They're both great players and great competitors and I wish them the best."

Sheduer, widely projected as a top-10 pick in next year's NFL Draft, had a night to forget under center, completing 23 of 38 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown, plus a first-quarter pick-six that set the tone for a miserable evening for the Buffs. He was escorted into the locker room with two minutes to play, although neither he nor his head coach and father Deion Sanders indicated that he was injured in their post-game media duties.

Deion, however, did reserve praise for Rhule. He said: "Hats off to coach Rhule and his staff. They coached a heck of a game. A great guy, we came into class together as coaches and I'm always rooting for them unless they play us. But I'm happy if we're going to get our butts kicked, might as well be him, a god-fearing man."

Rhule was happy with all aspects of his team's performance and toasted a "special night" for his program. He said: "Really proud of our team. The defense scored for the second week in a row and we got some contributions.

"My kind of game but we've still got a lot to improve, so I get to be the coach and be happy at the same time for a night. The atmosphere was electric, the crowd noise was fantastic, the energy was fantastic and out players fed off that. Thank you to the student section, thank you to our fans, it was a really special night.

"We've got to keep getting better, but this was a big moment for us to show up and not back down from their stars. Our team is a bit different, our team is our star. It was an overall win but we've got to play again next week and we've got a lot to do."
