Surry Community College’s Alpha Xi Tau Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society earned a Most Distinguished Chapter award earlier this semester. This is the sixth year in a row that the chapter has earned the award.

The PTK Carolinas Regional Convention was held in Thomasville from March 8-10. SCC’s chapter of the Honor Society received 10 awards, including the Beta Tau Continued Excellence award for the fourth year in a row and the Five-Star Chapter award for the tenth consecutive year.

The chapter president, Sydney Presa also won a Distinguished Officer Honorable Mention for her work on the chapter’s many projects throughout the year.

SCC College President Dr. David Shockley stated, “I am so very proud of our PTK officers and students.”

The Surry Community College’s PTK chapter is active in serving the community. The awards were for their most recent Honors in Action project researching the effects of single-use plastic on local waterways, as part of the project, the local chapter hosted a cleanup on the Fisher River.

The chapter also created videos answering common questions parents and students have about the transition from high school to college. These videos will be posted on the college’s website to help prospective students transition to higher education.

Other awards that the chapter received include the Superstar Chapter award, Outstanding Regional Honors in Action Project, Outstanding Regional Service Project, and Distinguished Honors in Action Project Honorable Mention. Chapter Vice President Ellie Edwards earned a Healthcare Edge award, and Chapter President Sydney Presa earned a Competitive Edge Award.

Established in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership, and service programming.
