A Cinco De Mayo Festival and party in downtown Fremont

Fremont was burning up on Saturday, or at least Jacob Estrada, of Toledo, was. He was the winner of the Jalapeno eating contest at the Cinco de Mayo Festival.

The Latino Community Projects group held its sixth annual Cinco de Mayo Festival on Saturday in downtown Fremont. Estrada ate 19 jalapenos in 2 minutes in the competition against six other contestants.

That wasn't the only activity. There were kids activities, community awards and scholarships were give, games were played, and it was a general day of fun in the downtown area.

Q: What is the favorite part of your job?

A: What I really enjoy about my job is working with groups of kids.

Is there a moment that you like the best?

I do work with the public, as a whole, and that is fun, but when you have a group of kids, especially elementary age, you come to the realization that you are the first person who has talked to them about something, or showed them something, like a live animal you are holding, or they are at camp and in a creek for the first time, and it's the first time they've held a crayfish, just that moment of excitement when they are learning something new, that is my favorite moment.

How long have you been doing it?

I've been doing this for three years, and before that I was with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, as a state parks naturalist, in the Northwest District, at East Harbor State Park, Marblehead Lighthouse, Maumee Bay State Park. We also have a woods behind our house, so as a family, we like to out there on walks, and take the dog and the kid, and see how the woods changes throughout the year.
