    VOTE: The News-Press Athlete of the Week presented by Babcock Ranch for May 13-18

    It's time for the final Athlete of the Week poll of the 2023-24 school year.

    Nominees are derived from scores and stats emailed by Lee County’s coaches during the week to sports@news-press.com . Readers can then vote in the online poll to determine who the Athlete of the Week will be. The poll will end at 10 a.m. Thursday.

    Last week, Bishop Verot baseball player Joey Lawson won with 62% of the vote.

    The winner will be announced on the @newspresssports Instagram page and on Twitter at @nphssports . The winning athlete will receive a shirt courtesy of BSN Sports.

    Here are the nominees for May 13-18:

    Boys track

    Collin Meagher, Canterbury

    Meagher finished in fifth place in the high jump at the Class 1A state meet on Wednesday.

    Jadrien Carmo, Bishop Verot

    Carmo PRed in the 400-meter dash to finish in sixth place at the Class 2A state meet on Thursday. He also contributed to Verot's eighth-place finish in the 4x400 relay.

    Joshua Dorestin, Dunbar

    Dorestin finished in eighth place with a PR in the 800 at the Class 3A state meet on Friday. He also contributed to Dunbar's fourth-place finish in the 4x800 relay.

    Dorian Mallary, Lehigh

    Mallary came in sixth place in the 400 and contributed to Lehigh's fifth-place finish in the 4x400 relay at the Class 4A state meet on Saturday.

    Girls track

    McKenzie Travis, ECS

    Travis dominated at the Class 1A State meet, coming away with three gold medals and becoming just the eighth girl in state history to take the triple crown in the sprints.

    Mackenzie De Lisle, Bishop Verot

    De Lisle captured gold in the 1600 and came in fourth in the 3200 at the Class 2A state meet on Thursday.

    Joslyne De La Nuez, Canterbury

    De La Nuez brought home four medals at the Class A meet. We won silver medals in the long jump and helped the 4x100 team to second place. She took third in the 110 hurdles and eighth in the 200.

    Julia Lemmon, Fort Myers

    Lemmon came away from the Class 3A state meet with two medals, coming second in the discus and sixth in the shot put.

    Baseball

    Jason Bello, Bishop Verot

    Bello hit a 3-run home run to help the Vikings earn a spot in the Class 3A state semifinals by defeating Berkeley Prep 4-0 in the regional final on Tuesday.

    Abby Hicks, LaBelle

    Hicks struck out eight batters and allowed just two runs in two regional playoff games to help the Cowgirls advance to the Class 4A state semifinals last week.
