Claxton Country Squares , a western style square dance club, offers a gathering place for regular square dances and lessons for those desiring to learn this art − the official folk dance of Tennessee.

Anyone can join them for easy, step-by-step instructions beginning Sept. 9, and continuing the first and fourth Saturday night of almost every month at Claxton Community Center, 1071 Edgemoor Road in Clinton.

The dances are from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The first two classes are free (Sept. 9 and 16). Afterward, lessons are $6 per dancer, with discounts offered for multiple family members, a news release said.

This club was established in 1986, more than 38 years ago, and has been an established landmark ever since. They are proud of their reputation of being the friendliest square dance club in the state of Tennessee, and regularly prove to their visitors they intend to keep that reputation intact, their release said.

They are also proud to be led by caller Mike Hoose, who is well known for his ability in calling square dance and also teaching those who wish to learn. He was born and raised in the Claxton area, and graduated from Clinton High School.

An enjoyable and healthy activity for the entire family, square dancing has no complicated moves. If you can move forward and back, left and right, you’re well on your way to being a pro. It will also help you to stay sharp mentally and allows you to bond with others over a shared activity in a welcoming community.
