Special Olympics Rhode Island will host its largest sporting event of the year, the State Summer Games, from May 31 to June 2 at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, featuring over 1,000 athletes from across the state competing in bowling, powerlifting, swimming, soccer skills, Unified soccer, and track & field.

"Summer Games is a magical time, representing the culmination of our athletes’ year-long dedication to sports training and competition," said Ed Pacheco, president and CEO of Special Olympics Rhode Island. "It is at the Games that the life-changing, transformative power of sports truly shines, with athletes arriving brimming with confidence and embracing the joy of inclusion. If you've never experienced our Summer Games, I strongly encourage you to attend this year. I promise you will be inspired by our athletes."

Besides the competitive events, the Summer Games will feature Olympic Village, Healthy Athletes Wellness Village, and an Athlete Business Showcase. The village will be packed with fun and engaging activities for athletes, their families, and attendees. Healthy Athletes will provide free vision, dental, hearing, and fun fitness screenings, as well as massage therapy for athletes. The Athlete Business Showcase will offer a platform for athletes to promote and sell products from their own businesses.

The 2024 Summer Games mark the 40th anniversary of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics Rhode Island. LETR RI, a vital part of the Special Olympics movement, includes members from law enforcement, corrections, fire, and justice departments. Throughout the year, they raise public awareness and funds for Special Olympics Rhode Island. For Summer Games, these “Guardians of the Flame” run the “Flame of Hope” from the State House to Opening Ceremonies.

Special Olympics Rhode Island's 2024 Summer Games are supported by a diverse array of sponsors. Leading the way as the presenting sponsor is LETR RI. The Opening Ceremony festivities on May 31 are made possible by the generosity of Pawtucket-based toy manufacturer, Hasbro. Additionally, the Olympic Village experience is elevated thanks to the support of SmartApp, which has contributed both financially and with in-kind assistance to create a memorable and inclusive atmosphere for athletes and attendees.
