Eugene police shot a man suspected of multiple violent crimes Wednesday evening after an extended standoff near 12th Avenue and Arthur Street.

Acting on a tip from a Portland-area agency, officers in Eugene identified the man as a suspect wanted on charges including attempted murder in the second degree with a firearm and assault in the first degree with a firearm, according to a release from the Eugene Police Department.

The suspect had been placed under surveillance when he attempted to leave the area in a truck at around 4:30 p.m., according to the release. Two SWAT vehicles moved in, blocking the suspect’s vehicle to prevent his escape. For the next two and a half hours, police negotiators engaged in back-and-forth talks with the man.

However, at 6:26 p.m., shots were fired, according to the release, and the man was hit.

Fearing that the suspect still had access to a weapon, officers moved in with shields before providing emergency first aid, according to the release. The suspect was later taken to a hospital for treatment.

As of Thursday morning, his condition had not yet been released. Neither the man nor any of the officers involved were identified.

Following the shooting, the Lane County Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team (IDFIT) took over the case, as required by Oregon law, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the use of force. The Lane County District Attorney’s Office would then review the findings to decide if any criminal actions were taken during the shooting.

Residents in the vicinity were alerted to the situation by Central Lane 911, which sent out a message urging them to stay indoors and avoid the area.

Some cell phone users may not have received the alert unless they had previously signed up for such notifications. Officials are urging residents to register for emergency alerts to ensure they receive critical updates in the future. To sign up, residents can visit member.everbridge.net .

The investigation is ongoing, and further details were expected once the DA's office completes its review.
