South Carolinians should expect rain and possibly warmer weather than usual during fall this year, the latest forecasts show.

South Carolina has had another scorching hot summer and while temperatures have already started dropping as fall approaches, don’t expect unusually frigid weather for the autumn season this year. The Palmetto State is headed for a possibly warmer than average fall, according to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center .

South Carolina can also expect a good dose of stormy weather, Farmer’s Almanac predicts.

Fall officially begins on Sept. 22 and ends on Dec. 21 this year. Here are the details on the fall forecasts from NWS and Farmer’s Almanac.

    NWS fall predictions for SC

The NWS predicts a 40% to 50% chance of temperatures leaning above average from October through December for the Upstate. Meanwhile, the Midlands and Lowcountry can expect a 50% to 60% chance of temperatures likely above normal for the same period.

    Farmer’s Almanac predictions

Overall, Farmer’s Almanac predicts cool, stormy conditions for the Southeast this fall.

For the extended forecast, South Carolina can expect heavy rain for most of the final week of September. The second week of October will experience a noticeable temperature drop, followed by rain and then fair skies in the middle of the month. A brief shot of cold weather will hit the state the week of Oct. 20, followed by more rain that will clear before trick-or-treaters head out for Halloween.

Temperatures will continue to drop the first week of November and skies will remain clear through Election Day on Nov. 5. Temperatures will gradually drop and rain will soak the area the later part of the month and on Thanksgiving.

South Carolina should expect rain and cold in early December, including some freezing conditions. Scattered showers should be expected through most of the month.

How Farmers’ Almanac predicts the weather

Founded in 1818, the Farmers’ Almanac uses a secret formula that includes components such as “sunspot activity, tidal action, the position of the planet,” to predict long-range weather forecasts. The forecasts are typically made two years in advance. Fans of the Farmers’ Almanac have, over the years, calculated that the predictions are accurate 80-85% of the time.
