What was intended to be “a fun little project” made a jumbo impression on all who enjoyed the inaugural Taco Tuesday in Franklin High School. During the second block of classes, tables were stationed in front of the area where the Culinary Arts program is located in the first hall.

One setting was devoted to spicy beef tacos prepared and served by Anthony Morgan, Brice Jones and Christopher Powell. Further down, Kevin Williams and Antwan Warren provided their chicken tacos, which included a milder but no less delicious sauce. The next offering featured plump shrimp tacos made by Tyaonna Mitchell and Markeese Edwards.

However they made them was a hit and voted the favorite of the three by those who sampled the choices.

Mitchell said between servings that the choice to use shrimp was her idea. The junior added that she likes the program and finds it interesting.

“I like food,” she added with a smile.” Markeese, a sophomore, said this is his second year in culinary arts and he plans to make it a career.

Kyle Cousins, the Culinary Arts teacher, said, “We wanted a contest to put the soft skills they already learned to use. Everyone’s taste buds are different so I gave them creative freedom and they made their own recipes. The students did the pre-orders through U.S. Foods [which supplies the program]. They practiced for two days and were able to overcome obstacles [beforehand].”

Cousins added that another contest could happen, perhaps one featuring the popular little sandwiches known as sliders.
