    Why is Labor Day celebrated?

Labor Day is celebrated to recognize the achievements of the United States labor movement in the late 19th century when American workers began to form labor unions and advocate for better working conditions, reasonable hours and fair wages, according to USA TODAY.

When did Labor Day first become federally recognized?

Labor Day became a national holiday in 1894 when President Grover Cleveland signed a law passed by Congress designating the first Monday in September a holiday for workers.

But the federal recognition was hard won, having come after a wave of unrest among workers and labor activists brought the issue of workers' rights into public view, USA today said.

The Des-Moines Register contributed to this report.
