    Special Olympics Torch Run Coming to Crescent City

    Members of Del Norte County Law Enforcement participated in Tip a Cop, a Special Olympics fundraiser at Sea Quake Brewery and Restaurant last week in preparation for the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), Tuesday, June 18.

    The Run is a special event in which law enforcement officers / staff and Special Olympics athletes carry the Flame of Hope to the Opening Ceremony of local, regional and international competitions.

    Crescent City Police (CCPD), Del Norte Sheriff (DNSD), Pelican Bay State Prison (PBSP) officers and California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers will participate in the Torch Run, Tuesday, June 18. The Run will start at Ocean World at 7:30am proceed to the DNSD and finish at the CHP office by 9am.

    Thousands of Northern California Law enforcement personnel will be participating in this quadriennial event.

    The LETR began in 1981 in Wichita Kansas. With the support of the International Association of the Chiefs of Police, the LETR has become Special Olympics largest public awareness and fundraising event. The upcoming Run will take place in 40 countries and has raised in excess of $900 million.

    The Northern California LETR began in 1997 and has raised more than $20 million for local athletes.

    The local Special Olympian team is known as the Redwood Champs.
