Under pressure, the ball was thrown by quarterback Shedeur Sanders to teammate Jimmy Horn, who had made a dart towards the sideline.

Horn caught the ball, but was deemed to have stepped out of bounds before securing possession.

The call was subsequently challenged, after it appeared that Horn’s foot may well have still been grounded when he initially caught the ball, which would have made it a legal play.

As the replays were assessed, NBC’s rules analyst Terry McAulay had his say.

McAuley, 64, worked as an NFL referee between 1998 and 2017.

Upon viewing the replay, he was unequivocal.

“That’s the way I see it Paul,” he began. “And it does appear indisputable in this case.”

With all announcers in agreement, the referee revealed his call.

“After a review, the ruling on the field of an incomplete pass stands as called, fourth down,” he said.

This prompted shock among the announcers.

“This is just stunning,” McAuley claimed. “There is no question he gets control with his hands with that toe down.

“This is just a clear error in my mind from the Big Ten command center.”

Not all fans agreed, however, with many taking to social media to chip in with their own opinions.

“Ball was still moving.. plain, simple and a good call,” one wrote on X.

The Cornhuskers went on to win the game 28-10 at Memorial Stadium.

They will return to action next Saturday against Northern Iowa.
