Thick Fog Reduces Visibility as Cold Front Brings Lingering Moisture

[JACKSON] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 5:00 AM EDT on September 2, 2024.

Dense Fog Advisory Remains in Effect

Residents of Eastern Kentucky are facing hazardous driving conditions this morning as a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 5 AM EDT. The advisory affects multiple counties, including Pulaski, Laurel, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Knox, Bell, Harlan, Floyd, Knott, Perry, Clay, Leslie, Letcher, and Pike, with major cities such as London, Somerset, and Pikeville experiencing particularly dense fog.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service in Jackson, KY reported that clear skies, light winds, and lingering low-level moisture are contributing to widespread fog formation. The visibility in the fog's densest areas has plummeted to below a quarter mile, creating dangerous conditions for early morning commuters.

Driving Conditions Expected to Improve by Dawn

The fog is expected to begin lifting towards dawn as drier air from a passing cold front continues to move into the area from the north. However, drivers should exercise extreme caution until conditions improve. The National Weather Service advises motorists to slow down, use low beam headlights, and maintain a safe following distance when navigating through fog.

    Outlook for the Week

Following this morning's dense fog, the National Weather Service forecasts that no further hazardous weather is expected for the remainder of the week from Tuesday through Sunday. However, they remind the public to stay vigilant and monitor for any changes in the weather.
