As summer's warmth begins to fade, Port Austin, Michigan, is gearing up to host one of its most anticipated community events—the Port Austin Summer Sendoff. Set against the backdrop of Lake Huron's picturesque shores, this annual celebration promises an action-packed day of games, camaraderie, and good old-fashioned fun. Scheduled for Saturday, September 7, 2024, the event will bring together locals and visitors alike to partake in a variety of activities that showcase the best of small-town spirit.

    A Full Day of Festivities

The Port Austin Summer Sendoff kicks off at 2:00 PM with the much-loved Carfest, a staple event for automobile enthusiasts and casual spectators alike. Carfest is set to start with a staging at the Port Austin Car Wash at 1:00 PM, where participants will line up their gleaming vehicles—each polished to perfection in hopes of catching the eye of judges and onlookers. At 2:00 PM, the cars will parade through town, cruising toward the gym where the main event will unfold. For just $20, attendees can enjoy not only the spectacle of vintage and custom cars but also games, prizes, and goodie bags, making it a fun and inclusive affair for the whole family.

As the day progresses, food trucks will roll in at 3:00 PM, offering a variety of delicious bites to fuel the festivities. From classic burgers and fries to more eclectic offerings, there’s sure to be something to satisfy every palate. Special vendors will also set up shop from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, selling a range of items including permanent jewelry, glitter tattoos, and a hat bar, adding an extra layer of charm to the event.

The Highlight: PA Olympic Team Games

The heart of the Summer Sendoff, however, is undoubtedly the PA Olympic Team Games, scheduled from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. This spirited competition invites teams of six to test their mettle across six unique and whimsical challenges. With a $30 entry fee, participants vie for bronze, silver, and gold medals in each round, culminating in the crowning of the highest-earning gold medal team as the PA Olympic Champs.

The games lineup promises a mix of hilarity and skill, featuring events like "Sock Knock," where competitors must knock down targets using only rolled-up socks, and "Hula Chain," which tests teams' coordination as they pass a hula hoop along a chain of linked hands. "Tipsy Tray Relay" adds a level of precariousness as participants race while balancing cups on trays, making every step a potential disaster. Other games include "Stomp Out," a fast-paced event where players aim to pop each other’s balloons, "Blindfield Relay," which challenges teams to navigate a course while blindfolded, and "Solo Stack," a nerve-wracking game of speed and precision involving cups and a timer.

These games are more than just a test of physical prowess; they embody the lighthearted competition and community bonding that Port Austin cherishes. Teams are encouraged to pre-register by Wednesday, September 4, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to participate and enjoy the fun.

    Evening Entertainment and More

The excitement doesn’t stop with the games. From 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM, the Beer Tent will be open, offering a place for adults to unwind and socialize over a cold beverage. The atmosphere will be further enlivened by live music starting at 7:00 PM, featuring the band Two Days Gone. Known for their energetic performances and crowd-pleasing repertoire, the band is sure to keep the good vibes rolling well into the night.

For those feeling lucky, 50/50 raffles will be held, giving attendees the chance to take home a cash prize while supporting local causes. This element of chance adds a layer of excitement, ensuring that everyone, whether they're a participant in the games or a spectator, has the opportunity to leave with a memorable memento of the day.

    A Community United

At its core, the Port Austin Summer Sendoff is more than just an event; it's a celebration of community. It serves as a reminder of the simple joys that come from gathering together, cheering each other on, and reveling in shared experiences. From the friendly rivalries of the Olympic Games to the shared cheers over a live performance, the event encapsulates what it means to be part of Port Austin.

“We wanted to create an event that everyone could enjoy, whether they’re competing or just watching,” says event organizer Lisa Thompson. “The Summer Sendoff is all about bringing people together, celebrating the end of summer, and showcasing the incredible community we have here in Port Austin.”

For newcomers and longtime residents alike, the Summer Sendoff provides a unique opportunity to connect with neighbors and make new friends. It's a day where the town's population swells, not just with visitors but with a palpable sense of joy and togetherness.

    How to Get Involved

Whether you're an eager competitor, a classic car enthusiast, or simply looking for a fun day out with family and friends, the Port Austin Summer Sendoff has something for everyone.
