TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – A nearly century-long tradition is back celebrating Hispanic culture with the community.

Fiesta Topeka is drawing thousands of people for weeks of events starting Saturday, July 6.

A unique aspect of the fiesta is its kings and queens, which has become legacy for some. Throughout the year, a handful of teens show off their commitment to their church by raising funds.

“There has been that process created for them and now they are creating that same process for their younger brothers and sisters,” event planner Renee Franklin said. “To see what it looks like to be in servant leadership for your church.”

At 8 a.m. June 6, people will run or walk in a 5K starting at the Oakland Community Center. Later on at 4 p.m., Evergy Plaza will host live music.

Organizers say this first weekend is just a taste of the action. The main fiesta begins Tuesday, July 16 in the Oakland neighborhood.
