Enough valid signatures have been received for Topeka Tax Petition

TOPEKA (KSNT) – A Topeka man has received enough valid signatures in an effort to lower property tax in Topeka.

Earl McIntosh has been organizing the property tax petition since February. According to the Shawnee County elections office, he has gathered 4,445 valid signatures. That’s more than 1,500 needed to certify the signatures.

With enough signatures, it’s now in the city’s hands.

“Under the state law, we are able to submit a petition for an ordinance created by petition,” McIntosh said. “So, if we meet that threshold, which we have, we got our signatures certified, then the city has 20 days to either pass it and if they don’t pass it then it goes to a city-wide vote.”

The 20 days begin after the submission of the certificate.

If not passed, the city-wide vote has to be held within 90 days.
