Myles Alonzo wins TGA’s City Stroke Play

TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – After three hot days on the course, recent Topeka West graduate Myles Alonzo was crowned winner of Topeka Golf Association’s City Stroke Play.

Alonzo, who graduated from T-West in May of 2024, and Washburn Rural alum Luke Leonetti led the pack entering the final round of the three-day tournament, tied at 137 strokes before Monday’s action. Alonzo separated himself on Monday, shooting a 68 on the final day to win the tournament by nine strokes.

“It feels pretty good,” Alonzo said of getting what he called his biggest win yet. ‘Competing against all these college kids and Washburn kids and everything. Felt good.”

Alonzo’s adding another stroke play trophy to his family’s case, as his old brother Addison also won it in 2022. Their dad, Marcus Alonzo, has been coaching the pair in golf their entire lives.

“He’s been grinding and grinding and grinding,” Marcus said of Myles. “It talks a lot of practice, especially the short game. His short game has really stepped up a lot here in the last few months, so I’m proud of him.”

The tournament concluded at Topeka County Club, which is slightly unfamiliar territory for Alonzo. He’s spent a lot of time at the other two courses, Lake Shawnee Golf Course and Cypress Ridge, where rounds one and two were played.

“I just knew the greens were going to be faster and the rough was going to be thick,” Alonzo said of TCC. “And they took our a bunch of trees, so I new I just had to hit fairways and I was going to be fine.”

Alonzo finished the tournament with a 205 overall. Leonetti finished in second with a 214, Max Stuckey-Halley shot a 218 and Jacob Diehl finished with a 220.

The former Charger recently signed with Fort Hays State golf, and plans to leave for Hays in a few weeks.
