Who Is Bailey Zappe?

Bailey Zappe is originally from Victoria, Texas, and attended Victoria East High School, where he played football. His best season was his senior year when he threw for 3,770 yards and 37 touchdowns while also rushing for 633 yards and scoring 15 touchdowns. Despite not being heavily recruited, Zappe went on to play college football at Houston Baptist University, which was his only scholarship offer.

Zappe played for the Huskies for three seasons from 2017-2020, though his final season was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He entered the transfer portal after the year, finishing his career with the team by passing for 1,833 yards and 15 touchdowns.

He then transferred to Western Kentucky University and was named the team's starting quarterback. In his final season of collegiate football, he led the FBS in passing during the regular season with 5,545 yards and threw for 56 touchdowns. He closed out his career as a Hilltopper with 5,967 passing yards and 62 touchdowns. In 2022, Bailey Zappe committed to the NFL Draft.

Bailey Zappe's Time In The NFL

The Patriots selected Bailey Zappe in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft with the 137th overall pick. He was named the third-string quarterback heading into the 2022 NFL season, behind Mac Jones and second-string QB Brian Hoyer. Zappe played in four games during the season, starting in two due to injuries to Jones and Hoyer. In those games, he was a perfect 2-0, with total stats of 781 passing yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions.

In the 2023 season, on August 29, Bailey Zappe was waived by the Patriots as part of the team's final cuts. He was later re-signed to the team's practice squad and reactivated to the active roster on September 9, 2023. This year, he played in 10 games, started in six of them, and had a record of 2-4. His total stats for the season were 1,272 passing yards, six touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Zappe's tenure with the Patriots officially ended on Tuesday, and he has now signed with the Chiefs' practice squad.

What to Expect From Zappe On The Chiefs

Zappe joins the Chiefs as their third-string quarterback, a role he's quite familiar with but in a completely different situation. Zappe will be behind Patrick Mahomes and Carson Wentz on the depth chart, as the Chiefs have decided to carry only the two of them on their official 53-man roster.
