Texas Longhorns Dominate Colorado State 52-0

The stifling Texas air is thick with celebration. In a not entirely unexpected turn of events, the Texas Longhorns dominated their opening game against Colorado State University (CSU). The offense, defense, and both quarterbacks all had their time to shine, and shine they did. With a final score of 52-0, the Texas Longhorns have cemented their place as SEC Championship contenders in a deafening rout. College football season has begun and it’s clear that you Don’t Mess With Texas.

    Hook 'Em Horns

The No. 4 ranked Texas Longhorns took on the unranked Colorado State Rams on a blisteringly hot Texas afternoon in the Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium at Campbell-Williams Field. The excitement was palpable, and the crowd was in for treat after treat the whole way through. Texas certainly needed some good news after learning star Running Back CJ Baxter would miss the 2024 season. Understandable concern for key injuries on the Texas Longhorns quickly dissipated as the game got underway.

    Texas Slaughterhouse Open for Business

Texas took control early, scoring their first of many touchdowns in the first quarter. Longhorn QB Quinn Ewers passed to sophomore Running Back Quintrevion Wisner, who carried it over the goal line. The rest of the quarter went Texas’ way up until the last few minutes when a throw from Texas Quarterback Quinn Ewers was tipped into the waiting arms of CSU receiver Chase Wilson.

It would not be enough momentum for Colorado State as the second quarter got underway. Texas’ defense was strong right out the gate, quickly forcing Colorado State to a turnover on downs. A five-yard penalty for a false start on Texas brought senior Kicker Bert Auburn out to boot a 45-yard field goal and bring the Texas Longhorns lead to 10.

Junior Wide Receiver Matthew Golden totaled 50 yards, including a 38-yard reception, and caught two touchdowns in the first half. In between those touchdowns, wide receiver and Alabama transfer Isaiah Bond scored his touchdown after receiving an Ewers rocket. Fully dominating at halftime, the Texas Longhorns led 31-0.

Monstrous Manning In The Second Half

Arch Manning relieved Quinn Ewers several minutes into the second half of the game. He had been in the game itself a total of less than two minutes before making his mark. Manning and the Texas Longhorns offense increased the lead from 35 to 48 in the 3rd quarter, but they didn’t stop there.

The third quarter notably saw Manning’s first career collegiate touchdown pass. Silas Bolden received that improvised 5-yard catch after Manning's run was halted by the Colorado State defense. The heralded redshirt freshman would go on to complete 5-of-6 passes for 95 yards. Throwing passes is not all that Manning can do though.

Manning’s first career rushing touchdown came at a particularly clutch moment for Texas. On 4th and goal, the Longhorns called a quarterback sneak and got Manning that last yard up the middle. Strong performances by Manning, freshman Wide Receiver Wingo, and redshirt freshman Defensive Back Roberson all helped the Texas Longhorns come away with a relatively stress-free 52-0 win.

    Final Thoughts

It’s hard to say just exactly when Colorado State got overwhelmed. Despite a solid showing by Running Back Justin Marshall of over 100 yards gained, Colorado State could not overcome the Longhorns' overall team strength. Texas nailed down the win in the final minutes with Defensive Back Wardell Mack’s extraordinary diving interception. With plays like this, SEC rivals might take note of their forthcoming clashes.

This game made it abundantly clear that the Texas Longhorns are a force to be reckoned with in 2024.
