The NFL season has begun. The Detroit Lions hosted the LA Rams on Sunday night football. Week 1 had plenty of storylines, but maybe none bigger than Matt Stafford and the Rams returning to Detroit. The Lions entered the game as five-point favorites, but the game was a dogfight on Sunday night football. It definitely did not disappoint. The Lions sent the Rams home in the 2023 season in the postseason, so the Rams came into town looking for revenge. Matt Stafford came back to the team that drafted him, looking to win.
Detroit Lions vs LA Rams
The game was back and forth as the Lions and Rams were evenly matched throughout the night. The Lions young receiver, Jameson Williams, had a coming-out party with over 100 yards receiving a touchdown. Williams also added some rushing yards as the speedy duel threat had a career day. Jahmyr Gibbs was able to find the end zone as well to give the Lions their first touchdown of the season.
The Lions had a 17-3 lead at one point in the game, looking dominant versus the Rams. If Detroit Lions fans are used to one thing in recent history is comebacks in the second half, mainly the 4th quarter by Matthew Stafford. Stafford rallied the Rams after injury to wide receiver Puka Nacua. All-Pro receiver Cooper Kupp definitely picked up the slack, racking up double-digit receptions and over 100 yards, including a touchdown, to take the lead late 20-17.
Jared Goff, quarterback for the Detroit Lions and former Rams starter, drove the Lions down to the red zone to tie the game at 20-20 with less than 30 seconds left. Tight end Sam LaPorta, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, and wide receiver Jameson Williams (adding to his already big night) contributed with huge plays on the drive to tie the game.
Detroit Lions take it to Overtime
The Detroit Lions kicker tied up the game with a 32-yard field goal with 30 seconds left. The Rams were unable to move the ball after a sack from former Michigan Wolverine, Aidan Huchinson. The Lions won the coin toss in overtime and chose to receive the ball in hopes of ending the game with a touchdown. The new overtime rules that took effect a few years ago allow a team to take the ball and score a touchdown, thus ending the game.
Jared Goff and the Lions moved the ball down the field with ease against a tired Rams defense. Detroit’s offensive line proved to be on the NFL’s best as they pounded the rock down the field in OT. David Montgomery finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to cap off the game.

The Detroit Lions start off the season by tarnishing the return of Matthew Stafford for a second time. Jared Goff led the team against the team who wanted him gone, proving his worth to Detroit. The Lions capped off a great Sunday with a 26-20 overtime victory to start the season 1-0. The Lions join the Bears and Vikings on top of the division. This team is full of grit and determination. Jared Goff continues to prove that he is good enough for a city that is more than ready for a winner.
