Most people are unaware of this completely abandoned neighborhood in Lee County.

While it may not be that unusual to come across a ghost town, there's something about this completely abandoned neighborhood that makes it particularly fascinating.

During the 1930s, a neighborhood known as "Ashwood Plantation" was established as a part of the New Deal's "Resettlement Act" during the Roosevelt Administration. The new community was designed to resettle families that were experiencing hardship onto farmland. In total, the Ashwood Plantation spaned 11,336 acres and contained at least 153 homes, many of which were remodeled or completely brand new.

The new community also included an additional 745 acres that featured a school and gymnasium, cotton gin, livestock corral, sweet potato curing plant, grist mill, general store, and gas station. The community thrived for just a decade until it abruptly and mysteriously became totally abandoned.

No one knows exactly what happened to the community of Ashwood that made everyone want to leave. Many speculate that small farm plots and low crop prices contributed to many hardships within the community. With farmers unable to make a solid living, many decided to relocate.

If you travel down this quiet country road today you'll notice a few surviving structures including the school. The rest of the neighborhood however is all but gone, with just a few concrete foundations and stairs that remain in the middle of the farm field in which this community once stood.
