Upstate Medical University transforms former hospital with $16 million in renovations
SUNY Upstate Medical University has renovated its “College of Health Professions” building to support the growing demand for Allied Health Professions. The industry is expected to grow by 15 to 30 percent in the next ten years and includes studies in respiratory therapy and medical imaging scientists. Dean Katherine Beissner says health students are different from medical students and can also land high paying jobs after graduation.
Hochul launches process to ban smartphones in schools statewide
Gov. Kathy Hochul inched toward a statewide ban on smartphones in schools, launching a “listening tour” across New York to hear from teachers and parents. The series of roundtables, which kicked off Monday in the Albany region, will help inform a statewide policy proposal the governor’s office said will be announced this year. Hochul last spring indicated students could still use phones with texting capabilities under her plan.

Researchers kicked off a process Tuesday to rework the state’s primary school aid formula, with five public hearings scheduled over the next month in New York City and statewide. The funding stream, known as Foundation Aid, directs $24.9 billion of the $35.9 billion state education package this year to local schools — but is facing mounting criticism that it’s outdated and inequitable.

Alex Guerrero, an immigrant from Cuba, moved to Syracuse the year he started high school.
