Global technology outage causes headaches for scouts at Tulsa International Airport

TULSA, Okla. — The global technology outage left passengers at Tulsa International Airport scrambling to figure out what to do after their flights were canceled. A group from Fort Smith is hoping they make it to a trip to the Bahamas.

“This is the first time I was ever going to fly. With this big of a trip for me, it’s frustrating,” said Joey Boyd.

Boyd is part of Troop 2316 out of Fort Smith, Arkansas. Their group of 11 is trying to get to the Bahamas for a scout trip.

“This wasn’t like we just threw this together six months ago, we had to book this trip two years out,” said Boyd.

They got to the airport at 4 a.m. only to learn their flight from Tulsa to Atlanta would be canceled — all thanks to a global outage.

“We’ve tried to go to any airline, we’ve contacted family members to see if they had any sort of private or something to try and get us out there,” said Boyd.

For many of these scouts, it’s a trip of a lifetime. They’ll live on a boat for a week, learning how to sail and having some fun too. But the canceled flights now have them scrambling to get to Marsh Harbour by 4 p.m. Saturday.

“We’ve offered to drive to Northwest Arkansas, OKC, Dallas, we’ve tried to go anywhere, but there’s just nothing available for us,” said Boyd.

Many people opted to book a flight for Saturday.

“It’s pretty frustrating, but I know you always run into problems with flights.”
