Alabama's latest recruiting decommitment actually makes a lot of sense

College football fans hate to see when their favorite school loses a previously committed recruit.

For the Alabama Crimson Tide, however, not all decommitments have to be a bad thing.

On3's Hayes Fawcett reported via X that 2025 linebacker Myles Johnson was decommitting from the program. Johnson had been committed to play for the Tide since October of 2023, before Nick Saban had announced his retirement.

Johnson is a 3-star recruit in the state of Alabama as well as a top-500 player nationally. At 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, Johnson is now projected by On3 to commit to the Florida Gators instead.

The move actually makes sense for both Johnson and the Crimson Tide. Playing time was likely going to be a serious issue for the in-state recruit. Head coach Kalen DeBoer and his staff have secured commitments from four other linebackers for their 2025 recruiting class. That includes a commitment from Dawson Merritt , a 4-star linebacker and one of the top-100 recruits in the nation.

4-star athlete Zymear Smith also decommitted from Alabama on the same day as Johnson.

Unlike other programs, Alabama can survive a handful of decommitments. They currently boast the No. 2 recruiting class in the country behind only the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Crimson Tide class is headlined by 5-star cornerback Dijon Lee , a 6-foot-3 recruit and the top player in the state of California.

DeBoer is dominating the recruiting trail in his first season for the Crimson Tide. A few decommitments won't spell disaster for his new program.
