As summer nears its end and SMU gets set for fall camp the roster and depth chart are starting to come together. By utilizing the transfer portal and another strong recruiting class the Mustangs are putting themselves in position to compete in their first season in the ACC.

As Rhett Lashlee & Co. make their move into the power rankings, On The Pony Express provides an in-depth look at the roster with our Position Preview series. We now take a look at the future at safety.

    In Year 2 at SMU

Abdul Muhammad joined the Mustangs this past season following back-to-back state titles at Dallas South Oak Cliff. He played in four games, preserving his redshirt, and had three of his six tackles against Tulsa.

The Mustangs picked up a key safety piece through the transfer portal with Jonathan McGill . The once-SMU commit was an instant leader as a captain and finished fourth on the team with 55 tackles. Cale Sanders Jr. also came in through the portal a year ago, finishing with 31 tackles, a team-high three fumbles and an interception.

    The 2024 class

SMU added three new safeties this offseason, one from high school and a pair of transfers.

Jaylen Moses helped lead Carrollton Newman Smith to its first playoff appearance since 2015.

Joining him are transfers Jaden MIlliner-Jones and Davaughn Celestine . Milliner-Jones was an SMU commit in the 2023 class before flipping to Colorado on Signing Day. He played in 12 games with one start this past season. Meanwhile, Celestine joins the Mustangs for his final season of eligibility following five seasons at San Diego St. where he went from walk-on to starter.

    SMU on the recruiting trail

The Mustangs have put together a solid 2025 class and plenty of it has to do with the safeties.

There are three and all are from nationally ranked programs — Sael Reyes (DeSoto), Tyren Polley (Duncanville) and Elijah Pratt (IMG Academy).

Reyes is the No. 46 safety in the nation according to the On3 Industry Ranking while Polley and Pratt come in at Nos. 55 and 67, respectively. They will help come in and full a room that will be hit hard by graduation after this season.
