Grandparents often hold a special place in our hearts. Frequently kind and generous, grandmas and granddads are a source of cozy comfort that creates memories that will last a lifetime. And every year grandchildren of all ages are encouraged to celebrate that special relationship on National Grandparents Day.

Though not a public holiday, National Grandparents Day was officially recognized on the orders of President Jimmy Carter in 1978. Since then it’s been observed on the first Sunday in September after Labor Day, which this year is September 8.

Ways to celebrate the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren include:

    • Gift and card-giving. Some 4 million greeting cards are sent each year on National Grandparents Day.
    • Suggest younger kids have a sleepover at their grandparents' house.
    • Enjoy an activity with grandparents, like crafting, scrapbooking, cooking, or walking.
    • Communicate, share your thoughts on life, and listen to grandparents reminisce.

However you choose to celebrate the day, just make sure your grandparents or your kids' grandparents are left in no doubt about how much they’re valued and loved.
