Colts may have to consider addition at RB following preseason game vs. Broncos

Following the Indianapolis Colts preseason opener against the Denver Broncos, the team may have to consider making an addition at the running back position.

During the game on Sunday, the Colts sustained two injuries, both of which came at running back. Trey Sermon would leave the game with a hamstring injury, and then undrafted rookie Trent Pennix would leave with a groin injury.

As of now, there is no official word from the team on if either player will miss any time or how much time could be missed if that’s the case. However, if both players are going to be sidelined for even a little bit, then an addition at that position might be in the cards to bolster the depth.

If the Colts do not have Sermon or Pennix to take snaps, then at running back that leaves the team with only Jonathan Taylor, Tyler Goodson, Evan Hull, and Zavier Scott. With two joint practices and a preseason game all taking place over the next week, getting through with only four running backs will be a challenge.

If any sort of addition is made, a corresponding roster move will have to follow with the Colts currently at the maximum amount of players.

Throughout training camp, Sermon has been the unquestioned second running back on the roster, handling the bulk of the snaps with the second team offense and even filling in for Taylor with the starters when he needs a breather.

During Sunday’s game, after Sermon exited, it was Tyler Goodson who was the next back off the bench followed by Evan Hull. Assuming Sermon is the backup back, then those two are competing for the final roster spot at that position.

Neither back could get much going on the ground against Denver, with Goodson averaging 2.1 yards per rush on seven attempts and Hull 2.0 yards per carry on eight attempts.

Goodson would have a five yard reception, while Hull had a 15 yard catch and run on a fourth down.
