How the Giants could hypothetically get out of Daniel Jones' contract before the season

The New York Giants might have a big problem on their hands with quarterback Daniel Jones.

Jones’ miserable preseason performance against the Houston Texans on Saturday bewildered even Giants head coach Brian Daboll, begging the question if New York can really go into the season with Jones on the roster.

While the team has absolutely no way of cutting Jones before the seasons starts because of how his contract works, there is hypothetically a way for the team to move on from Jones before the season begins.

Over the Cap shows that a post-June 1 trade would save the Giants more than $36 million on the cap and only cost a dead cap hit of a little more than $11 million for the 2024 season.

If you’re wondering how any team in the NFL could justify trading for Jones with his monstrous contract, we imagine a new franchise would negotiate a substantially lower deal with the Giants quarterback at the point of a deal.

Jones’ team would have to be willing to renegotiate the contract as it is, as he might just be content being possibly benched in New York and earning the gobs and gobs of money he’s set to make for the season.

Jones would most assuredly be a high-end backup for 2024 if an NFL team traded for him, which is very possible if the Giants are through with him.

New York hasn’t given any public indication of Jones being on the outs, but Saturday’s disaster in Houston does make you wonder what’s coming.
