Jerod Mayo says Patriots don't have a starting QB right now

The starting quarterback position is still up in the air for the New England Patriots, according to coach Jerod Mayo.

This seemed like a bit of a contradiction to his previous statement earlier in the day. The coach indicated that the team would stick with their developmental plan with rookie quarterback Drake Maye, even if it wasn’t popular. Maye threw for 47 yards and rushed for a touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles in preseason action last Thursday night.

When appearing on “The Greg Hill Show” Monday, Mayo left open the possibility that Maye could start in the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Patriots’ starting quarterback battle has been one of the biggest storylines throughout training camp. The preseason finale against the Commanders looms large, as it will give the coaching staff one final look at the offensive unit in a game-like setting.
