Michigan names former Yankees legend honorary captain for Texas game

Former New York Yankee and Baseball Hall of Famer Derek Jeter will be the honorary captain for the Michigan Wolverines when they welcome the Texas Longhorns to Ann Arbor, Michigan for a battle of top ten teams in the nation on Saturday.

The announcement was made by Wolverines head football coach Sherrone Moore while talking with WXYZ Detroit’s Brad Galli on September 2 .

Jeter, a long-time resident of Kalamazoo, MI growing up, was recruited by his Wolverines to play baseball. He opted to go straight to the pros and end up being one of the most popular Yankees and baseball players ever.

The 10th-ranked Wolverines dropped a spot in the first AP Top 25 college football and AFCA Coaches polls. Michigan is 9th in the coaches voting.

The Longhorns come in at three in both polls after a Texas-sized thrashing of the Colorado State Rams during Week 1.

The AP Top 10 consists solely of teams in the Big Ten and SEC , with each conference represented by five teams.

Jeter continues to be seen and heard now that his playing days are over. What better way to see him than leading his childhood college football team out against one of the best teams in the nation.

Kickoff for Longhorns-Wolverines is Noon ET on Saturday, September 7.
