Deion Sanders asked about Micah Welch’s playing time ahead of Nebraska matchup

Colorado football retooled its running back room this offseason, though the youth of the position created some mysteries heading into the season. After accounting for only 14 carries in the season-opening win over North Dakota State, the question marks remain.

A few things became clear, including sophomore Dallan Hayden and junior Charlie Offerdahl being the top backs after playing a combined 58 snaps and receiving most of the carries. However, the absence of true freshman Micah Welch stood out.

When asked if Welch would play in Week 2 against the Nebraska Cornhuskers , CU head coach Deion Sanders said that playing time between his RBs is up to the game’s situations. He said his “youngsters” need to protect quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the passing game.

Coach Prime was still complimentary about Welch and the rest of his running backs:

“We know Micah can run his butt off,” Sanders said. “He’s physical, he’s abrasive, he’s abusive, he is unbelievable with the ball in his hands and we hope that we could get that. But, we have several backs that can do that, man, and we’re hoping we can run the ball a lot more successfully.”

Perhaps, Coach Prime used the moment to challenge Welch. Or maybe he wanted to give props to his talented RB room.

But if anything is certain, Welch will earn snaps by proving he can protect his quarterback.
