Housing shortage has led South Bay farmworkers to live in desperate conditions; a new bill aims to help change that
GILROY — In the modest Gilroy two-bedroom home that farmworker Jesusita Ortiz shares with her family, the living room doubles as a storage space and a shared bedroom for her children, complete with a bunk bed and colorful anime posters lining the walls. The compact set up is a necessary arrangement for the growing family — nine in all, with a grandchild on the way.
San Diego Public Library Celebrates San Diego Comic-Con 2024 with Commemorative Card
Every year, the San Diego Public Library partners up with a local artist and Comic-Con International to offer a special, limited edition commemorative Comic-Con library card. This year’s card features artwork by John Jennings, the award-winning illustrator behind the graphic novel adaptations of Octavia Butler’s Kindred and Parable of the Sower.
After Soto's departure, San Diego's record looks similar to last year
Juan Soto has come and gone, and the San Diego Padres don’t seem to have changed much. The Padres were 12 games over .500 in August 2022 when they acquired Soto in a blockbuster deal with the Washington Nationals. They finished that year a distant second to the Dodgers in the NL West, but then they beat Los Angeles in the playoffs and made the NL Championship Series. Then last year, San Diego finished a disappointing 82-80 despite plenty of production from Soto. The Padres traded him to the Yankees in the offseason, and although it’s been a big loss — Soto has played brilliantly in New York — San Diego is in pretty much the same spot. The Padres are 52-50 after Sunday’s win over Cleveland. San Diego did finish with a run differential of plus-104 last year, and this season’s team isn’t on pace to end up anywhere close to that, but it’s still remarkable how the arrival and departure of an MVP-caliber player didn’t turn the Padres into a juggernaut and didn’t leave them out of contention.
Lucky Israeli-Flagged Desserts at Sycuan Slots Tournament
SAN DIEGO – This past weekend I stayed at Sycuan Casino Resort on a reservation owned by one branch of the Kumeyaay people. My favorite slot machine is in the non-smoking section. It is named Aztec Temple and is a “penny slot.” I like this machine since I am a graduate of San Diego State University, whose team nicknames are the Aztecs, and I always get more than I put in (fingers crossed I don’t jinx myself for next time).
