After Soto's departure, San Diego's record looks similar to last year
Juan Soto has come and gone, and the San Diego Padres don’t seem to have changed much. The Padres were 12 games over .500 in August 2022 when they acquired Soto in a blockbuster deal with the Washington Nationals. They finished that year a distant second to the Dodgers in the NL West, but then they beat Los Angeles in the playoffs and made the NL Championship Series. Then last year, San Diego finished a disappointing 82-80 despite plenty of production from Soto. The Padres traded him to the Yankees in the offseason, and although it’s been a big loss — Soto has played brilliantly in New York — San Diego is in pretty much the same spot. The Padres are 52-50 after Sunday’s win over Cleveland. San Diego did finish with a run differential of plus-104 last year, and this season’s team isn’t on pace to end up anywhere close to that, but it’s still remarkable how the arrival and departure of an MVP-caliber player didn’t turn the Padres into a juggernaut and didn’t leave them out of contention.
Lucky Israeli-Flagged Desserts at Sycuan Slots Tournament
SAN DIEGO – This past weekend I stayed at Sycuan Casino Resort on a reservation owned by one branch of the Kumeyaay people. My favorite slot machine is in the non-smoking section. It is named Aztec Temple and is a “penny slot.” I like this machine since I am a graduate of San Diego State University, whose team nicknames are the Aztecs, and I always get more than I put in (fingers crossed I don’t jinx myself for next time).
Mayoral Candidate Larry Turner Demands Reassessment of Proposed Shelter Lease After City Attorney’s Report
Larry Turner, mayoral candidate for San Diego, has called for an urgent reevaluation of Mayor Todd Gloria’s proposed 30-year lease for a 1,000-bed homeless shelter at Kettner and Vine, after a critical report from the San Diego City Attorney’s Office. Gloria’s plan includes the lease of a 65,000-square...
White Sox's trade deadline tactics are making Garrett Crochet to Padres unattainable
Perhaps the worst kept secret at this year's MLB trade deadline is the infatuation that the San Diego Padres' front office has with Chicago White Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet. It feels like all Pads fans have heard for the past month is how much president of baseball operations AJ Preller loves the idea of adding Crochet to the Friars' rotation.

Kamala Harris-backed bail fund that freed violent criminals back in spotlight
Vice President Kamala Harris is coming under renewed scrutiny as she embarks on her second White House bid over her promotion in 2020 of a bail fund that helped free convicts, including murderers and serial domestic abusers. Facing heightened pressure from his fellow Democrats, octogenarian President Joe Biden on Sunday dropped out of the 2024 […]
KamalaCare: Harris backed ‘Medicare for All’ and abolishing private insurance
Vice President Kamala Harris’s past support for “Medicare for All” places her well to the left of President Joe Biden and is likely to prove a liability for her as she seeks to win the 2024 presidential race. As senator from California, Harris supported Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-VT) Medicare for All plan, which would have […]
