St. Bonaventure, Agoura fall in CIF-Southern Section softball semifinals Saturday

The last two local softball teams remaining in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs were beaten at their own games Saturday afternoon.

The St. Bonaventure and Agoura softball teams entered the sectional semifinals averaging 10 and nine runs per game, respectively, during their three playoff games.

Both were slugged out of the sectional playoffs at home.

St. Bonaventure allowed a run in eight of the nine innings during its 20-13 loss to Cerritos-Valley Christian in Division 5, which included a decisive seven-run ninth inning.

“We gave it away,” St. Bonaventure coach Andy Gibson said. “That’s what a young team does sometimes. We didn’t seize the moment.”

Agoura could not overcome the seven-run second inning put up by visiting Riverside-King in a 14-6 home loss in Division 3.

“We played a little sloppy,” said Agoura coach Chance Redmond, “but they were better.”

Rachel Godoy was 4 for 5 with four RBIs and three runs scored to lead St. Bonaventure (22-3-1).

Leea Martinez was 2 for 6 with three runs scored. Laura Lynch went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Hudson Ortiz was 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Hallie Barlow finished 3 of 5 with three RBIs. Janessa Brown was 2 for 5 with two runs scored.

The game was tied 8-8 after five innings. The Seraphs took a 13-10 lead with a five-run sixth inning, which included two-run singles by Godoy and Ortiz.

Valley Christian tied the game in the top of the seventh with the help of Peyton Kingery’s third home run of the afternoon.

Kingery was 5 of 6 with three home runs, nine RBIs and four runs scored. Britton Brown was 6 of 7 with three runs scored.

The Seraphs had chances to win the game in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, but left runners in scoring position.

Five players had two hits for Agoura (14-8). Claire Heisinger was 2 for 2 with three runs scored. Mia Gomez, Jordy Charash and Amaya Del Olmo all went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Briona Ferdman finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

St. Bonaventure and Agoura await next week’s CIF-State regional pairings.
