Standoff with armed man shuts down I-35 near Faribault
FARIBAULT, MN – Interstate 35 came to a standstill on a Sunday afternoon as authorities dealt with a tense situation south of Faribault in southern Minnesota. The Rice County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident unfolded around 2:52 p.m. when a 41-year-old driver fled from law enforcement while heading northbound on Interstate 35. After stopping his vehicle, the man brandished a handgun and moved into the southbound lanes of traffic.
Sharing Our Roots expands acreage, staff, outreach
FARMER CLIENT RELIEF FUND Last Friday, Sharing Our Roots announced that the Farmer Climate Relief Fund had raised $10,802 with the support of 46 donors: $9,302 through Paypal and a $1,500 offline match. With the donations, they’ve been able to immediately distribute financial aid to farmers and community gardeners whose seasons have been upended by the wettest spring on record. County's reasons for flag, seal opposition falls flat
Earlier this year, Minnesotans engaged in heated discussion over a redesign of the state flag and seal, eventually enticing a number of counties and municipalities to formally oppose the redesign. New bulletproof vests coming for Northfield's first responders
Thanks to the efforts of many donors in Northfield, many of Northfield’s first responders will soon be getting bulletproof vests to wear on the job. The new vests will likely be available to members of the emergency medical services and Northfield area fire and rescue services teams by the end of the year. City presents 5th & Washington project “reboot;” Crazy Days set for thursday; Online workshop will focus on chloride pollution due to salting of streets, other uses
On Tuesday night during the Northfield Economic Development Authority meeting, the City of Northfield presented what City Administrator Ben Martig called a reboot of the 5th & Washington Street project. The City is once again talking about building a structure on the Washington Street Parking lot that would house a new Northfield Municipal Liquor Store, three levels of parking that would more than double the number of spots on the land right now, four additional 1500 square foot retail spaces, possibly up to 54 apartments, green areas and public spaces, including public restrooms, as well as what the presenters referred to as a “Grasvedt Lane enhancement.”

Brad Moening, the longtime cross-country coach for Highland Park High School, will be inducted into the Minnesota Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame during a coaches clinic on August 5 at the Grand Event Center in Northfield. Moening has coached boys’ and girls’ cross-country at Highland for 22 years. During that time, the Scots have won nine Saint Paul City Conference titles and made four team appearances at state, taking third in both 2019 and 2021. The Highland girls have won 15 conference titles, including the last 12 in a row, and have made four trips to state, including finishing first in 2021 and 2022, and second in 2023. Moening also has won numerous awards as coach of Highland’s Nordic ski teams. He plans to continue coaching cross-country this fall, but is turning over the reins of the school’s Nordic ski program to former Highland student Will Robertson.

Northfield’s Ethan Lanthier, who completed his junior season as a 6-5 right-handed pitcher for Kansas University in 2024, was selected by the New York Mets in the Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday, July 16. The 2020-21 Male Athlete of the Year at Northfield High School, Lanthier was drafted in the 12th round by the Mets and was the 353rd overall pick in this year’s MLB draft. What was up with the 'sewage spill' signs during the recent flooding in Faribault?
During the recent flood, a number of orange signs warning of raw sewage being spilled popped up around the city, leaving at least some residents confused about the situation under their feet. According to Public Works Director Travis Block, those signs were related to a common practice known as “bypass pumping,” which is when the sanitary sewer is rerouted to the storm sewer.
