Charles Trowbridge Tittman appeared at the Holy Trinity Church in a recital. • Mrs. John Hyland received a visit from Mrs. S.A. Cunningham from Memphis. • Services were held for Susie E. Alexander.

R.L. Dent Jr. purchased the former Cowan home on Cherry Street and Halls Ferry Road. • Jess Willard, former heavyweight champion, appeared as a referee at the Legionnaire weekly sport card. • Alphons Capas died.

80 Years Ago: 1944
Mr. and Mrs. William Nachman and their daughter, of Mobile, were in Vicksburg to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Newman Loewenberg. • Daniel W. Green, with the Seabees, was in Vicksburg on leave. • Staff Sgt. and Mrs. Frank Mahoney announced the birth of their son, Michael Alexander.

70 Years Ago: 1954

The Rev. John H. Young died. • Mr. and Mrs. James Person Jr., of Hermanville, announced the birth of a son, Thomas. • Wayne Robertson was in New Orleans on business.

60 Years Ago: 1964
Services were held for Virginia Jordan, a longtime employee of WES. • Carrie Louis Wallace died. • Charles Crosby was elected president of the Culkin Lions Club.

50 Years Ago: 1974
Services were held for Ernest D. Sheffield, former alderman of Vicksburg. • The burned steamer, Sprague, was opened to the public for mini-tours. • John L. Noble Sr., the operator of the J.L. Noble and Sons Hardware and Building Materials Company in Edwards and Utica, died.

40 Years Ago: 1984
Ginger Rogers kissed Mayor D. Grubbs after getting the key to the city during a stop while vacationing aboard the Mississippi Queen. • William M. Holmes Jr died. • Elizabeth Harris, a seventh-grade student at Warren Central Junior High, served as a page for the House of Representatives during the first week of the legislative session in Jackson.

30 Years Ago: 1994
Carolyn H. Kim, a senior at WCHS, received a four-year, $20,000 scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.

20 Years Ago: 2004
The Mount Elem M.B. Church youth was sponsoring a car wash at Taco Bell on Pemberton Boulevard.

10 Years Ago: 2014
Ray Hume was to retire after 26 years as an educator with the VWSD. • Port Gibson commemorated the U.S. Colored Troops with a program at Vicksburg City Hall.
