WALL TOWNSHIP — Full of all kinds of shapes and sizes, The Buick Club of America – New Jersey Chapter (BCANJ) held its highly anticipated antique car show this past weekend, an automotive tradition that takes place in the Wall Municipal Complex parking lot.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 93 drivers displayed their antique vehicles, not just Buicks, some with signs detailing their histories and even original certificates of manufacturing.

The show was postponed on Saturday, July 9 due to poor weather conditions. However, that didn’t stop club members from showing off their cars, some that dated back to before World War II.

“This is a top-of-the-line four-door,” said Joseph Puleo, who was showing off his black 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood. “I know a lot of guys in the club, and they invited me to come and show this thing off, they’re a nice group of guys.”

BCANJ has about 75 members, Assistant Director Kevin Keenan told The Coast Star July 8, and not just from around the state. The club has members from all over the northeast; Pennsylvania, Delaware and New York, all who have had this interest in antique cars from a young age.

“I was 18 years old when I convinced my dad we should buy a Cadillac, we were always a Cadillac family,” said Puleo. “After that, we started buying more, and today, the collection is up to 39 cars.”

Other car brands included GMC, Ford, Packard and Chevrolet, all with different, bright colors and shapes that brought history to life.

“This is my love and hobby…,” said BCANJ Executive Director George Newberry. “It’s just a love of antique cars, the heritage of them, I like to get into what makes them tick and how they were built.”

Newberry, a former mayor and committeeman of Wall Township, has 11 cars of his own, which he polishes and refurbishes with his son in his spare time. Newberry served one-year terms as mayor in 2010 and 2015 and served on the township committee from 2009 to 2019.
