It's no secret that the Washington Capitals need help on offense, and this offseason, there will be several names to keep an eye on in free agency and on the trade market. But one interesting option that D.C. could consider is Jake Guentzel.

Per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman , the Carolina Hurricanes, who acquired Guentzel from the Pittsburgh Penguins at the trade deadline, are willing to trade the pending UFA's negotiating rights for a mid-round draft pick.

Washington has the draft capital needed to get such a deal done with three third-round selections in this year's draft. However, is it the right move for D.C.?

Guentzel is a proven, consistent scorer who can play on either side of the wing and finished the season with 30 goals and 47 assists for 77 points in 67 games. He has been a point-per-game player over the last three seasons, while also showcasing his wicked shot, quick hands and unparalleled hockey sense.

For a long time, general manager Brian MacLellan has been stressing the need for a star top-6 winger who can bolster the offense, and the 29-year-old certainly fits the bill.

Without a doubt, Guentzel would give the Capitals something they desperately need up front: a high-scoring, speedy star winger who can find twine, make plays on the fly and add a spark on the forecheck. He can also bolster the power play and be a difference-maker that D.C. needs.

However, he comes with a high, high price tag. And even though Washington is expected to have cap space to work with this offseason, it's not unlimited space, with T.J. Oshie's future still hanging in the balance. And bringing Guentzel on board would take up a large amount of room and limit other outstanding needs.

Guentzel also has good memories with the rival Pittsburgh Penguins, and he may not want to sign with his longtime rival, as was the case with Marc-Andre Fleury when he was being traded. Carolina may not want to trade Guentzel within the division, either.

Overall, it's a name to consider, especially with the Capitals transitioning to a younger group and looking for more speed and finish up front. However, it doesn't seem like it would make the most sense.
