WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — The Chesapeake Bay Trust and other environmental agencies announced over $1.3 million in funds for projects in five states and D.C. on Wednesday.

The money will fund 33 different projects in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware and D.C.

This is part of the ongoing Chesapeake Bay Green Streets, Green Jobs, Green Towns (G3) Grant Program. The Chesapeake Bay Trust said that the program helps communities working on “gray” infrastructure projects — like repaving roads or changing intersections — add “green” elements to these plans.

Officials said that these additions help manage stormwater runoff, reduce energy use and flooding, improve waterway health and more.

A total of 18 organizations in Maryland, three in Virginia, two in D.C. and eight in West Virginia received funds.

The G3 program started in 2011. More than 300 projects have received funding from the project, adding up to more than $17.7 million.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and Prince George’s County Department of the Environment joined the Trust to make the announcement.
