WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – After President Joe Biden pardoned LGBTQIA+ military service members from previous convictions based on their identities, the Biden family held a Pride Month celebration at the White House Wednesday.

First Lady Dr. Jill Biden said to the crowd, “Pride is a celebration. But it’s also a declaration that we will not be silenced. That we will show up – for our ourselves, for each other, and for the country we deserve.”

Ashley Biden works as a social worker and joined her mother at the celebration.

“LGBTQ students deserve to be safe at school, at home, and in their communities. Period,” she said. “They should never, ever have to endure violence or cruelty because of who they are. My parents know that. It’s why my dad has built the most pro-equality administration in history.”

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and his husband Chasten also attended the event, while singer Deborah Cox performed.
