This weekend in D.C., check out the 2024 Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall, an LGBTQ book festival at the National Press Club or Taste di Islands Block Party at The Bullpen.

    1. 🎉 Celebrate Indigenous culture

The annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival is back on the National Mall with free performances, concerts, family-friendly activities, workshops and more.

The vibe: This year's theme is "Indigenous Voices of the Americas" and will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI).

    • More than 250 Indigenous and Native athletes, dancers, artists, musicians, chefs and storytellers from across the U.S. and eight other countries will be there .

What they're saying: The festival is centered around this particular museum to give an "opportunity for visitors to hear from and talk with Native and Indigenous people," Cynthia Chavez Lamar, director of the NMAI, said at the opening ceremony on Wednesday. Like the festival, "the museum ensures our visibility as Native people in the narratives about America."

Flashback: This year is also the 35th anniversary of the National Museum of the American Indian Act .

If you go: Expect crowds, as always, and bring water.
