The Golden Knights are shaking up their goalie tandem. Both Adin Hill and Logan Thompson are impending free agents after the 2024 NHL Season. One of them has now been traded. Thompson will be sent to Washington for two third round picks.

Danny Webster of the Las Vegas Review Journal was the first to report the news:

Thompson , 27, will now share the net with Charlie Lindgren in Washington. With Vegas, Thompson posted a 25-14-5 record with a 2.70 goals-against average, and a .908 save percentage in 46 games last season. The year prior, Thompson notched a record of 21-13-3 with a 2.65 goals-against average, and a .915 save percentage. He made the All-Star team that season.

For Vegas, there are a few things that need to be mentioned. They’re now in the hunt for a backup goalie in free agency, they actually lose cap space because Thompson’s $766K AAV is lower than league minimum, and they seem to have drafted his future replacement with the pick they received from Washington. Pavel Moysevich was selected with the 83rd pick acquired in this deal. Moysevich is regarded as a huge 6-foot-5 goalie. The club must have really wanted him given the fact that Vegas has no second, third, fourth, or fifth round pick prior to the deal.

For Washington, Thompson is certainly a hell of a lot cheaper than Darcy Kuemper, who was dealt to the Kings. It remains to be seen if Washington will try to get Thompson extended. He certainly deserves a raise over the below league minimum mark he’s currently earning. That probably motivated Vegas to move him, knowing they didn’t want to pay more to retain his services beyond next season.
