ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals have made a huge upgrade on the blue line, acquiring defenseman Jakob Chychrun from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Nick Jensen and a 2026 third-round pick.

Washington announced the trade shortly before the start of free agency.

Chychrun, a left-hand shot, is an offensive defenseman who can be used in multiple situations and can add a spark to the power play with his quick hands and booming shot. He can eat heavy minutes, too, and though there are still ways to go for his defensive game, he's a great addition that can bring more firepower to the top-4.

In 82 games with the Senators last season, Chychrun posted 14 goals and 27 assists for 41 points. The 26-year-old has had two 40-point seasons in his still-young career and packs promise, and brings more talent and skill to the blue line.

General manager Brian MacLellan expressed his desire to change up the blue line ahead of free agency, and in turn, chose to trade Nick Jensen, a right-handed veteran blueliner who has played heavy minutes for D.C. since being acquired back in 2019.
