The real motive behind Georgetown’s gender-inclusive housing

Georgetown University surprisingly announced Monday that “gender-inclusive” housing will now be available for the 2023-2024 academic year. The traditionally Catholic university’s decision represents the increasingly ubiquitous nature of leftist ideology on college campuses.

The decision was no doubt representative of the sentiment of the student body. According to the Hoya, Georgetown’s student newspaper, students asked for the change in a referendum that passed with 91.2% of the vote. Though the turnout of the student body was just 31.2%, such an overwhelming majority certainly helps explain the university “establishing measures toward comprehensive gender-inclusive housing.”

Students can now room with the opposite sex if they “identify as transgender, non-binary, or gender non-conforming” or if they are “welcoming and affirming of LGBTQ individuals and wish to be considered as a potential roommate for students seeking gender-inclusive housing,” according to the university’s residential living homepage . Georgetown’s Board of Directors had no obligation to support the proposal but rightfully decided to listen to the substantial majority of its student body.

Considering that over 450 colleges and universities already support similar housing measures, the decision subscribes to this gender-inclusive movement on college campuses. What makes it so significant is that Georgetown is one of the few Catholic universities in the country. Given that this change to residential life contradicts the teachings of the Catholic Church, one might have thought that the Georgetown Board of Directors would overrule its constituents and maintain the status quo.

College students and the academics who teach them, however, are arguably the most far left group in the country. Whether they’re chanting “intifada” while Jewish students walk to class, studying the cultural implications of fatness , or justifying women and men sharing a living space, their ideological opinions are becoming increasingly universal. The merit of such opinions may be up for discussion, but these college campuses are now almost devoid of diversity of thought.

There’s an uncomfortable, unspoken rule in academia that conservative perspectives are to be shunned and denounced. A report from the Harvard Crimson in 2022 found that over 80% of Harvard professors self-identified as “liberal” or “very liberal.”

As such, this decision from Georgetown might not represent its hypocritical aversion to Catholic teachings, but rather a desire to avoid blowback from the student body and faculty. Had the board of directors chosen not to support this gender-inclusive housing proposal, the backlash would have been loud and fierce.

The university made both a democratic and inclusive choice. It’s critical, however, to consider the motives behind the decision given the pervasive nature of leftist ideology on college campuses.
