ARLINGTON, V.A. — Amid a busy offseason filled with trades and contracts, general manager Brian MacLellan's phone lit up with a text from Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin.

Despite being overseas, he's taken the time to check in about the offseason, and it only took one text to get his point across and share how he felt about the team's direction.

    Well, not even a text.

"Just... the thumbs-up emoji," MacLellan revealed with a laugh.

Ovechkin sent the text after the team acquired Pierre-Luc Dubois from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Darcy Kuemper, which initiated what would be a busy next two weeks for MacLellan and the Capitals.

Following the Dubois trade, Washington acquired Logan Thompson and Jakob Chychrun and shipped out Beck Malenstyn and Nick Jensen, and to open free agency, the team signed Matt Roy, Brandon Duhaime and Taylor Raddysh.

All in all, about a third of the roster saw significant change, and for now, the team is done making moves.

MacLellan hasn't touched base much with Ovechkin or the leadership group since everything went down but does believe that the team will be happy with where things are headed.

"Yeah, I think, I hope, you know, the rest of the team is excited. I think they all fit, they're all good players, they're all at the right age," MacLellan said. "I just think it's going to make our team better, make the players around them better, too. It's better for younger guys to be slotted in with good players and it's an easier game to play with them."
