    DC Mayor extends heat emergency to July 9

    WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — The Office of D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that the heat emergency has been extended across the District until July 9.

    Bowser activated the heat emergency on July 4. However, with temperatures passing 95 degrees on the following day, Bowser said that the heat emergency was extended to Tuesday or until conditions improved.

    Bowser encouraged residents and D.C. visitors to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

    Wilson Aquatic Center in DC reopening

    Officials said residents should limit their time outdoors, drink plenty of fluids, keep pets inside, check on neighbors, and wear appropriate clothing.

    For residents across the District experiencing homelessness, the following shelters are open:

    Men

    • 801 East Shelter at 2722 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. SE
    • Adams Place Shelter at 2210 Adams Pl. NE
    • New York Avenue Shelter at 1355-57 New York Ave. NE
    • Emery Shelter at 1725 Lincoln Rd. NE

    Women

    • Harriet Tubman Shelter for Women, DC General Building 9 at 1900 Massachusetts Ave. SE
    • Patricia Handy Place for Women Extension at 1009 11th St. NW

    LGBTQ+

    • Living Life Alternatively at 400 50th St. SE

    The cooling center at the Downtown Day Services Center at 1313 New York Ave. NW is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Officials said entry will be permitted on a first-come, first-served basis.
