WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — Every year usually during beach season, you hear stories about people getting caught in rip currents.

A rip current is a strong body of water moving away from the shore. At times when you are at the beach swimming people can get stuck in a rip current and get pulled further into the sea.

But what do you do if you get stuck in a rip current? Experts advised that when you are stuck in a rip current to swim parallel to the current to get out of it.

Experts warn that it is dangerous to jump into the water to try to help save someone who is stuck in a rip current.

There have been many reports of people trying to save someone stuck in a current and finding themselves in danger as well. Experts say even the strongest swimmers can have trouble getting out of a rip current.

Instead, they advised that from the shore, you call a lifeguard or 911.

Some options that you could do is throw out an object to help the person in the current, to float or explain to them how to get themselves out of the current.

    Stay safe this beach season!
