WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – World leaders are in Washington, D.C., for a NATO summit honoring the alliance’s 75th anniversary.

The high security gathering comes as Russia intensifies its war in Ukraine and NATO allies brace themselves for a possible return of Donald Trump.

Much of central Washington is shut down as part of a major security operation.

Leaders from all NATO member states are expected to attend.

“For 75 years, NATO has served a vital role in protecting the American people and making the world a less dangerous place,” said National Security spokesperson John Kirby.

President Joe Biden is expected to address the gathering slated to produce new commitments to support Ukraine, as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s attacks show no sign of letting up.

“If he thinks he can outlast the coalition of countries supporting Ukraine, he’s dead wrong,” said Kirby.

World leaders are also preparing NATO for a possible return of Donald Trump to the presidency.

Mr. Trump has repeatedly threatened to pull the U.S. out of the alliance if member countries don’t meet their financial obligations, an idea echoed by some Republicans.

“Republicans, of course, celebrate the peace and prosperity that NATO has secured, and we’ll continue to stand by our partners as we prevent needless wars. But we also believe that NATO needs to be doing more,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).

The White House says the summit will put on full display the importance of the alliance for global security.

“The United States and several of our allies will have several big announcements at this week’s summit,” said Kirby.

President Biden is also expected to hold a press conference on Thursday.
